As someone who lived in South Korea for 15 years and loved the culture of the region I gotta say that East Asians (especially Koreans, Japanese and Taiwanese) are great immigrants. Ditto for many Southeast Asians as we see the rise of Malaysia and Singapore.
But regardless to where the immigrants come from large numbers are definitely not conducive to assimilation. Many new immigrants can be like the European colonialists of the past and primarily hang out within their own groups.
I am sure I am not unique as a Canadian in going from being a supporter of immigration to hating mass migration.
I am visiting Korea right now and I see far more foreign workers than in 2019 when I left.
Warning my Korean friends to not support too much immigration, and when doing so to focus on allowing in Asians that have similar culture and societies.
As someone who has been involved in movements like the Fairy Creek Old Growth Movement (2020-2021), and the Truck Convoy I trust the governments zero percent.
Sorry about what happened to you during the pandemic. I am 100% Covid unvaccinated too, but I found a way to keep to myself and survive.
This article is excellent. I’ll share some thoughts in detail when I get the time, but for now, as a fellow unvaccinated Canadian that had people wanting to fight me for not wearing a mask, this spoke to me.
Very interesting. I spent four months in Saskatoon in 2009 on work assignment and I didn't get a sense of conformity by I was mostly working on a job site and wasn't there too long in any case. I really liked it.
All your comments and observations about culture are correct.
My parents have lived in SK since 2008. The province has always been conformist; the NDP used to run Saskatchewan after all, and Tommy Douglas was a Saskatchewanian.
OK thanks, interesting. I loved my experience by I didn't interact with the locals too much. I was doing engineering work at Queen Elizabeth Power Station. I didn't realize it had an NDP history, I get confused about the CCF and Tommy Douglas and which province they were active, I never really knew if it was AB, SK or MB. I also didn't realize there is still a franco element, in places. As a Quebecker I related to that.
Yeah true, and they are lot less woke. I left Montreal to Move to Ottawa six years ago, and I was shocked at the woke shit I discovered here, I was really insulated from it in Montreal. Quebec is much more Chauvinistic about its language and culture, no one is running around apologizing or feeling guilty.
Not all prairie people are the same. I wouldn't judge the whole region based on your unfortunate experiences (I'm sorry to hear about that).
This article may be of interest.
I don't agree with the author's politics generally, but he does help point out how the dog whistles are not new and in Canada they were foundational to the success of parties of both the left and right.
Unsuccessful integration and excessive immigration are a risk (just look to the history of FN people), but I hope enough of us can continue to maintain a healthy distrust of politicians and government overreach both now and when the pendulum swings.
Thanks for your article. I watched in horror in 2020 as the insane policies I saw in the East swept over Saskatchewan with hardly any resistance. It's good to hear from someone else who witnessed what happened in the prairies at that time.
I thought the Western independence and resilience from the tough pioneering stock that built up this region would withstand the pressure to implement the draconian policies being rolled out elsewhere, but I was grossly mistaken. The boomerist fear of death and discomfort paralyzed the province, and really shattered the illusion I had of our prairie toughness.
The founding stock is definitely made up of groups that like to have an ordered society, and happily listen to authority. I know that's in my bones, too. But the selection of the immigrant populations we have sent to us are even more subservient and obedient (Filipinos, Indians, etc.) and they continue to push the needle further that way.
I don't know if it is in our character to act more like Alberta and gain some sense of pride and a desire for self-determination, but I have some hope that as we continue to be abused by the East and are more disillusioned by the horrors of mass immigration, there could be enough of an opening to get a wedge in there and begin changing the mindset.
Thank you for your comment. It is good to get perspective from a freedom-loving Saskatchewanian. I was honestly quite surprised how quick SK was to bend the knee to the gods of the Wuhan plague.
Your observation about the latest immigrant groups is sadly correct; the Sikhs are a bit unpredictable though. They can be conformist, but they can also be volatile, and perhaps this is part of the anarcho-tyranny that has swept Canada.
Let’s hope that the founding stock of SK gets its act together and rejects mass immigration and globalism.
I lived in Minneapolis for 20 years. I left in 2022, not willing to wait for the next lock down. I still have family there. Driving there since, I feel like I am driving into a third world country, which puts me a little on edge.
There are around 100,000. My experience with them has been mostly negative. They are being DEIed into gov at every level, while they have shown a singular ability for corruption in the NGO realm. They have been seeded in mid sized towns all aound the state, with so much access to gov benefits. The law is tentative, afraid to appear racist, exacerbating the corruption. Many liberals fall all over themselves apologizing for them. Though I know a few conseratives who are patiently waiting for the day….

I think many Canadians are now in your shoes.
I am visiting Korea right now and I see far more foreign workers than in 2019 when I left.

Yikes. I hope the Japanese, Koreans, and Eastern Europeans don't make the same mistake Canada has made.
Have a “Get Out of Canada Plan” in place?
Currently working on one for East or Southeast Asia. Some of my friends are doing the same.
I don't plan to leave Canada, unless there is violent persecution.

In my view, Quebec still has a chance of maintaining its Canadien identity.
Although the entire place carries a whiff victimhood since the 1960s.

I wrote in the article that there are good, freedom-loving prairie folk. Did you miss that?

Very sad. Not sure what Minnesotans were thinking allowing their land to be overrun with Somalis.

That's a lot of writing. Reviewing books and studies on the genetic relationship between ethnicity and IQ could have saved some time and space.

Maybe we shouldn't have imported all those thousands of Ukrainian Waffen SS veterans after the war, huh?
