The Leather Apron Club video on the Greks was great. I think it was from BAP that I first found out about the intolerance for homosex built into Greek law, which is a killshot against the charge that they were all flaming homos ... an argument I find I end up getting into almost every time the Greeks are brought up in casual conversation. Most curious how normies will respond to any praise of the Greeks with "but they eye gay though", almost like this meme has been propagated as a means of dissuading westmen from looking into their heritage.

Yes as LAC suggests, homosexuality was probably more of a degenerate elite indulgence than a common, everyday phenomenon. Sort of like today.

I have mixed feelings about calling Greek civilization ‘Western,’ because the labelling is schizophrenic. Greeks are ‘Eastern’ and ‘Byzantine’ when they’re annoying schismatics, and ‘Western’ and ‘civilized’ otherwise. Historians seem capricious in using these terms.

My own sense is that Greek civilization may have influenced the West, especially through Christianity, but Ancient Greece was not considered part of the West.

Oh for sure - the Greeks weren't Western in the slightest. Classical civilization whether Archaic Greek, Hellenistic, or Roman was not Western. It was however ancestral to the West, which to my mind at least is formed from the union of Athens, Rome, and the forests of Germania.
